SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The No. 18 UConn baseball team (26-7, 4-0 BIG EAST) held on for a 7-6 victory against Seton Hall (8-24, 2-2 BIG EAST) to win its seventh in a row.
With the potential tying run at second base, UConn closer Justin Willis notched back-to-back strikeouts to earn his seventh save and take the series opener against the Pirates.
Austin Peterson recorded his seventh win of the season (7-0) with seven strong innings of work.
The Huskies jumped on the board in the first with an RBI single from Erik Stock after a walk and hit by pitch opened the frame. Ben Huber added a bases loaded walk in the inning to push the lead to 2-0.
UConn tacked on in the second with a three-spot that included a two-run triple for Zach Bushling.Â
After Stock registered his third hit in the fourth, an RBI triple, Bushling lifted a sacrifce fly to center to make it 7-1 Huskies.
The Pirates rallied for three runs in the sixth and two in the ninth but were unable to overtake the Huskies.
Brady Afthim tossed a 1-2-3 eighth inning for the Huskies with a pair of strikeouts.
Next up, the Huskies and Pirates will play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 16 beginning at 12 p.m.
