NEW HAVEN, Conn. – In a top-25 matchup featuring two of the hottest teams in Connecticut, the No. 15 UConn women's lacrosse team powered past No. 25 Yale, 20-14, Wednesday afternoon at Reese Stadium.
Seniors Grace Coon, Lia LaPrise and Sydney Watson each recorded seven-point efforts as the Huskies earned their first win over the Bulldogs in program history.
Coon had a career day with seven goals, LaPrise followed with five scores, and Watson dished out a game-high three assists. Fellow senior Stephanie Palmucci chipped in with two goals and three points as the senior quartet provided 18-of-20 goals on the day for the Huskies.
Coon started off on fire, scoring four times within a six-minute span as UCoon took an early 6-1 advantage. LaPrise fed Palmucci before taking it to the cage herself, giving the Huskies an 8-1 lead at the end of the opening frame.
Watson provided the offense in the second quarter with a pair of goals, though Yale stormed back to cut the gap to 10-9 at the half.
Watson stayed hot on the attack with another strike coming out of the break, and junior Madelyn George found sophomore Susan Lafountain to push the scoreboard to 12-9 in favor of the Huskies. The Bulldogs responded with three straight goals to make it a one-goal game once more, though UConn answered with a 4-1 run to close out the quarter.
Yale came within two to kick off the fourth frame, but LaPrise and Coon each put in a pair to close out the game as UConn finished the season 10-1 in non-conference contests.
The Huskies will head back to Storrs as they host Butler on Saturday, April 23 at 11 a.m. in their final home game of the season.
