PISCATAWAY, N.J. - In a highly contested game between a pair of top-15 teams, the No. 15 UConn field hockey team (2-1) lost to No. 8 Rutgers, 1-0, in the first overtime period on Friday afternoon.
Both sides were even throughout with Rutgers having a slight edge with 11-9 shot advantage and 3-2 lead in penalty corners.
Cheyenne Sprecher was solid in cage for the Huskies making five saves on the afternoon and came up with some big ones in the final three quarters.
The Huskies generated a few quality opportunities to attempt to break the stalemate. Claire Jandewerth and Jasmijn Damman both had shots on goal off a UConn penalty corner in the third quarter.
McKenna Sergi created a great opportunity late in the fourth quarter with a superb individual effort that had her weave between a pair of defenders and get a shot on goal that was padded away by the Rutgers keeper.
Next up, the Huskies head to Cambridge to face No. 7 Harvard at 1 p.m.
