STORRS, Conn. – The UConn men's soccer team defeated the Marquette Golden Eagles, 3-2 on a thrilling night at Morrone Stadium. The Huskies came back from a two goal deficit, scoring three unanswered goals, with two goals coming from junior forward Scott Testori.
Marquette started the game off strong, opening the scoring in the 5th minute off the head of Jai Hsieh-Bailey. The Golden Eagles doubled their lead in the 31st minute as Beto Soto gave Marquette a two goal lead only thirty minutes into the match.
UConn gained momentum going into the half as freshman defender Kieran Chandler scored his second goal of the season, cutting into the deficit right before halftime. The Connecticut native got on the end of a cross by Nicolas Tomerius that somehow found its way to a wide open Chandler in front of goal. The Huskies outshot the Golden Eagles in the first half 13-6.
UConn started the second half strong controlling much of the possession and creating many chances on goal. The Huskies finished with 16 shots in the second half alone.
In the 67th minute a scuffle broke out by the UConn bench resulting in two red cards being shown to each team. UConn's Ayoub Lajhar was shown a straight red card while on the bench for the Huskies. Brooklyn Merl of Marquette also received a straight red card, forcing the Golden Eagles to play a man down for the rest of the match due to Merl being on the field at the time of the incident.
The Huskies quickly capitalized on their man advantage just four minutes later in the 71st minute as Testori netted the equalizer, scoring his fourth goal of the season. The Connecticut native headed home a cross from Chandler putting UConn level with twenty minutes left in the match.
UConn was shown another straight red card in the 73rd minute as Chandler was sent off for denying Marquette of an obvious goal scoring opportunity. Both teams would finish the match with ten men.
Testori went on to score the game winner in the 81st minute as he chipped the ball over the goalkeeper's head off a cross from Pierce Bateson. This is Testori's first multi-goal game in his career.
"We needed that one", said head coach Chris Gbandi. "Not the start we would have liked, but I thought the guys fought back, and it was a good victory for us."
