STORRS, Conn. – UConn senior, Kate Shaffer, scored four goals to pace the Huskies on the way to a 17-6 win over visiting University of New Hampshire on Monday afternoon at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium.
UConn wins their second-straight and improve to 3-1 on the year, while UNH falls to 1-3.
The Huskies sprinted out to a 3-0 lead and led 5-2 after the first quarter as junior, Susan Lafountain, put two in the back of the net to kickstart the offense. The Huskies opened the second quarter just like they opened the first, scoring three-straight, capped by Lafountain's third to complete the hat trick for an 8-2 lead.
UNH's Izzy Homes scored the Wildcat's lone goal of the quarter before the Huskies rang off four-straight to close the half. Senior Kyra Place scored back-to-back goals 47 seconds apart, her first and second of the year, while grad student Grace Coon buried her first of the day and the 100th of her career. UConn junior, Lauren Barry, closed out the first half scoring at 1:43 to send the Huskies into the break, up 12-3.
The UConn offense continued to roll in the third quarter, while keeping UNH off the scoreboard. Shaffer scored twice and Place added one, both completing hat-tricks. Shaffer collected her fourth of the day, and team-best 17th of the season, in the fourth quarter to close out the UConn scoring.
Grad student goalkeeper, Landyn White, got the start and played into the third quarter, making six stops in the defeat of the Wildcats.
The Huskies held a 39-18 edge on shots and dominated on draws, winning 19 of 25.
The Huskies are right back at home this Saturday when they host the No. 22 nationally ranked UMass Minutewomen at Morrone Stadium. Opening draw is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
