SAN DIEGO - The UConn baseball team (9-4) resumes its spring break trip with a four-game series at San Diego State (4-8) at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
Thursday, Friday and Saturday will have 9 p.m. ET start times and the series finale on Sunday will wrap up at 4 p.m. ET. There are no video streams for this weekend, audio can be heard on MIXLR with Chris Jones on the call.
UConn is coming off a series win against Hawai'i that saw the Huskies pile up 40 runs in the final three games of the series. Bryan Padilla led the way going 8-16 with five runs batted in and seven runs scored. Luke Broadhurst added seven RBIs in the series and Ben Huber posted four doubles and walked eight times during the four games.Â
The Huskies have won six of their last seven games.
Probable starters for this weekend for the Huskies features RHP Ian Cooke (Thursday), LHP Andrew Sears (Friday), RHP Stephen Quigley (Saturday) and RHP Jack Sullivan (Sunday). The starting rotation looks to rebound after a tough weekend in Honolulu. Sullivan was the lone bright spot in his return to the rotation. The Carmel, N.Y. native fired 5.0 strong innings with just three hits allowed and one earned run to earn his second victory of the year.
UConn and San Diego State have met just once before. The No. 22 Huskies beat the Aztecs in 2011, 9-3, utilizing a six-run eighth inning to earn the road victory. Nick Ahmed went 4-5 with a home run in the win while George Springer went 2-4 with three driven in. Elliot Glynn pitched six strong frames on just three hits. David Fischer earned the victory out of the pen.
San Diego State is 4-8 on the season and have had to deal with weather in Southern California the past week. The Aztecs had the final two games of their series with San Jose State postponed and Tuesday's midweek game against UC Irvine was canceled due to the weather.Â
The Aztecs are a program that have made six NCAA Tournaments since 2009 but have made it since 2018. Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn, Stephen Stasburg, Travis Lee, Mark Grace, Graig Nettles are just some of the Major League players to have played at SDSU.Â
No. 1 prospect in the Mountain West, Cole Carigg, leads the way for SDSU hitting .340 with six extra base hits and 13 runs batted in. Shaun Montoya is having a good start to the year, hitting .342 with 13 runs scored and nine stolen bases. Jonny Guzman, TJ Fondtain, Chris Canada and Omar Serrano round out the weekend rotation this week for the Aztecs.Â
