QUEENS, N.Y - The No. 19 UConn baseball team (22-8, 2-1 BIG EAST) split a doubleheader to earn a road series win at St. John's (17-12, 1-2 BIG EAST) on Saturday afternoon at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
The Huskies clinched their sixth-straight series win with a 8-3 victory in game 1 of the doubleheader and battled in a back and forth game 2 that resulted in a 9-7 win for the Johnnies.Â
In game one, UConn jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning with an RBI ground out from Paul Tammaro and sacrifice fly from Dominic Freeberger.Â
LHP Andrew Sears was strong for the Huskies with 5.1 innings of two-hit ball that featured just one walk and eight strikeouts.Â
After St. John's tied the game at 2-2, Korey Morton smacked his sixth home run of the year, a solo shot, to regain the lead for UConn, 3-2.Â
Sears left the game with the lead in the sixth but the Johnnies were able to even the game at 3-3.Â
The game remained tied until the eighth, with one out Ben Huber drew a walk and Jake Studley followed with an RBI double in the gap that put the Huskies in front, 4-3.Â
LHP Zach Fogell threw a scoreless 8th inning and the Huskies tacked on four runs in the ninth including a two-run single from Bryan Padilla.Â
Padilla and Studley both finished with three-hit efforts while Morton, David Smith and Luke Broadhurst all recorded multi-hit games.Â
The second game of the twin bill featured a see saw battle with the Huskies jumping ahead 2-0 after Studley recorded an RBI double in the first and sacrifice fly in the third.Â
St. John's responded with a three-run frame in the third to take its first lead of the day, 3-2.
Studley continued his hot day with a game-tying two-run homer in the fifth to make it a 4-4 ballgame.Â
St. John's immediately took the lead back with a two-run fifth inning to push its lead to 6-4.Â
UConn countered with a game-tying two-run homer for Dominic Freeberger and Ben Huber followed with a go-ahead solo shot to give UConn a 7-6 lead.Â
The lead was short-lived as an error in the bottom of the sixth, quickly led to the tying run coming across for the Johnnies.Â
St. John's scored a run in the seventh to break the tie and a run in the eighth for some much needed insurance.Â
UConn was unable to battle back and lost the series finale 9-7.
The Huskies will return to the field against CCSU at Dunkin' Park in Hartford on Monday, April 10 at 4 p.m.
