STORRS, Conn. - The No. 9 UConn baseball team (33-11, 9-3 BIG EAST) rallied from a 7-1 deficit to defeat Seton Hall (25-20, 7-6 BIG EAST), 10-7, in front of a lively Elliot Ballpark crowd on Friday night.
Garrett Coe was the game-changer for the Huskies on Friday, coming out of the bullpen and pitching a career-high 5.1 shutout frames. He allowed just one hit and struck out a career-high seven batters to earn his fifth win of the year.
After Coe got the Huskies out of the third inning trailing 7-1, the UConn offense worked their way back into the game.Â
Back-to-back two out RBI singles from Jake Studley and Luke Broadhurst made it a 7-3 deficit.Â
After a scoreless fourth inning for Coe, the Huskies placed runners at second and third with no outs. After back-to-back strikeouts, T.C. Simmons delivered a two-run double to bring the Huskies within a pair of runs, 7-5.Â
Dominic Freeberger followed with an RBI single to make it a one-run ballgame, 7-6.Â
The rowdy UConn faithful got louder and louder with each passing batter as the Huskies continued their two-out rally.Â
Jake Studley then singled to push Freeberger to second base. A double steal placed runners at second and third and a great read from Freeberger at third base on a ball in the turf allowed him to score the tying run on a wild pitch.Â
Broadhurst then walked and the Huskies pulled off a double steal for the second time in the inning to put runners back at second and third. Bryan Padilla gave the Huskies their first lead with a two-run single. All six runs in the frame scored with two outs.Â
Coe kept piling up zeroes on the mound until he came out of the game in the eighth with runners at first and second and two down.Â
Zach Fogell came out of the pen and got a fly out to end the threat and keep the Huskies up 9-7.Â
Freeberger added an insurance run on an RBI single to make it 10-7 and Fogell recorded his first career save in college with a scoreless ninth.
The series resumes tomorrow at 4:05 p.m. with Stephen Quigley taking the mound for the Huskies.
