STORRS, Conn. – The No.15 UConn women's field hockey team (1-2) fell in double shootouts to No.16 Rutgers (4-0) on Friday evening in Storrs, CT. The shootouts were forced after two overtime periods that left the Huskies and Scarlett Knights tied at one apiece.
The first half of the game remained scoreless as UConn and Rutgers went head-to-head both on offense and defense. Goalies for each team made crucial saves, while both defenses came up with big stops on three penalty corners each.
The Scarlett Knights were on the board first in the third quarter, however, that goal was quickly answered by UConn. Sophomore, Maia Dechiario, passed the ball to Julia Bressler for UConn's only goal of the game. The goal was Bressler's first on the season and gave Dechiario her first career point with the Huskies.
The game remained scoreless through the final period of regulation time, and during two 10-minute overtime periods, before being decided in a shootout.
UConn freshman goalkeeper, Natalie McKenna, had eight saves in the loss and tacked on four more saves during the double shootout.
The Huskies will host No.13 Harvard on Sunday, September 3rd at 1:00 pm in Storrs. The game will be streamed on UConn+.
