DURHAM, N.H. — The University of Connecticut men's hockey team defeated the University of New Hampshire by a score of 4–1 on Friday. UConn's goaltender, Tyler Muszelik, made 36 saves, while freshman Brendan Dunphy scored his first career goal.
The first period began with New Hampshire jumping out to the early attack, pressuring the UConn defense preventing the Huskies from generating any momentum. The Huskies special teams were tested early as multiple penalties put the Huskies on the penalty kill. The UConn penalty kill held their ground preventing the Wildcats from taking the early lead. Late in the 2nd period, the Huskies forecheck forced a turnover and off the turnover Jake Richard found Brendan Dunphy who capitalized scoring his first goal of the season giving the Huskies a 1-0 lead heading into the period break.
In the second period, New Hampshire once again jumped on the attack but after weathering the early storm, the Huskies found their stride. Midway through the period, the Huskies were able to draw a penalty, giving them the man advantage. On the power play, UConn went to work, maintaining puck and gaining momentum. Eventually their persistence paid off as freshman Alexandre Blais collected the puck and fired it past the New Hampshire netminder for the Huskies second goal of the evening. With time running down in the period, UConn turned the puck over and the Wildcats were able to capitalize, to cut the UConn lead to one heading into the break.
In the third period, both teams battled and continued to put pressure on the defenses. With the one goal lead, UConn's defense held strong and Tyler Muszelik continued to shut the Wildcats down. Late in the third period, the Huskies were able to extend their lead as a shot by Ethan Gardula bounced off a pair of New Hampshire defenders and ended up in the back of the net to give UConn the two goal lead. With under three minutes remaining, New Hampshire pulled their goalie in favor of an extra skater, and with the goalie pulled captain Tabor Heaslip scored on the empty net to secure the 4-1 win.
UConn will wrap up the weekend series tomorrow Nov. 22 in Storrs. Puck drop is schedule for 6:30pm.
