STORRS, Conn. — No. 7 UConn women's hockey and Boston University played to a 1–1 tie at the Toscano Family Ice Forum on Friday evening. The Terriers won the shootout, earning an extra point in the Hockey East standings as UConn moves to 5-1-1 in conference play and 12-3-2 overall this season.
The first period began with both teams exchanging missed opportunities early. UConn had the advantage in faceoffs and shots on goal, but the Terriers goaltender, Mari Pietersen, consistently denied the Huskies attempts. The period concluded scoreless, with both netminders Tia Chan and Pietersen standing firm in goal. Shots were even at 11 a-piece in the first period.
The second period saw Boston University take the lead midway through the period with a short-handed goal, giving the Terriers a 1-0 advantage. UConn responded with significant offensive pressure, notably during two power plays, but Pietersen was steadfast in goal for Boston University, making multiple saves.
With just over three minutes remaining in the period, sophomore forward Claire Murdoch netted the equalizer for UConn off a great feed from Ashley Allard, leveling the score at 1–1. The period concluded knotted at one. The Huskies held a 14-13 advantage in shots in the second period.
The third period remained scoreless between UConn and Boston University despite numerous attempts from both teams to break the deadlock. Both teams continued to exchange shots throughout the period, but both netminders continued to stand tall. Chan finished with 43 saves in the game, her third straight 40+ save performance. The period ended without a goal, sending the game to overtime.
The five-minute overtime period was marked by intense back-and-forth action, but neither team managed to break the deadlock. UConn dominated the faceoff circle, winning multiple crucial draws, including three by Allard. Both goalies were tested, but once again held firm, sending the game to a shootout.
In the shootout, the Huskies missed their first two attempts, while the Terriers made one out of their first two, giving the visitors the slight edge. Despite UConn's successful penalty shot in the third round, the Terriers also converted on their third shot giving Boston University the shootout victory.
