IRVINE, CA - The UConn baseball team (1-6) opened the Southern California Classic with a 8-5 defeat to the University of Southern California (8-1) on Friday night at Great Park.
The Huskies jumped out to an early lead in the second inning on a two-out RBI double by freshman catcher Connor Lane. Maddix Dalena later scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0 Huskies.
Oliver Pudvar make his first career start and threw three strong frames that featured a season-high five strikeouts.Â
The Trojans took the lead for good with a three-run fourth inning against LHP Cayden Suchy. Suchy settled in after the fourth with two scoreless innings and finished the night with five strikeouts.Â
Tyler Minick made it a 4-3 game in the fifth with a sacrifice fly to left field.Â
Trailing 8-3 going to the ninth, the Huskies mounted a mini-rally with Rob Rispoli hitting a pinch hit RBI single to drive in his first career run. Caleb Shpur followed with his third hit of the night, an RBI single, to cut the deficit to 8-5.Â
The Huskies rally ended with the potential tying run in the on deck circle.
UConn looks to bounce back with a 2 p.m. ET first pitch against UCLA on Saturday, March 1.
