WASHINGTON, D.C. – Despite a cold shooting day the No. 3 UConn men's basketball team (18-1, 8-0 BIG EAST) survived a scare and gutted out a road win over Georgetown (9-9, 1-6 BIG EAST) by a score of 64-62 on Saturday afternoon at Capital One Arena. Tarris Reed Jr. had a double-double to lead four Huskies in double-figures in the tight victory. UConn's victory was its 14th in a row, the eighth streak of at least 14-straight triumphs in program history.
The win was UConn's 11th-straight against Georgetown, taking each meeting with the Hoyas since rejoining the BIG EAST prior to 2020-21. The Huskies shot a season-low from the field and struggling from three (5-26) but had only six turnovers, second-fewest in a game this season. Reed Jr. finished his day with 15 points, 11 rebounds, three blocks and three steals. Joining him in double-figures was Silas Demary Jr. who stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals. Braylon Mullins scored 11 and Solo Ball added 10, including clutch buckets late. Alex Karaban finished with seven points and grabbed five rebounds, while Jaylin Stewart was a team-best +6 in 14 minutes off the bench.
UConn led by as many as 10 in the first half but saw the opening stanza lead dwindle to four at the break. The Hoyas jumped ahead for a brief spell early in the second half, before a 9-0 run flipped the lead in favor of the Huskies and they did not trail the rest of the way. GU had a chance at a game-tying three in the final seconds, but UConn forced a miss and Mullins grabbed a board before a game-sealing free throw.
How it Happened
The Huskies jumped ahead fast with the game's first three baskets, including a pair from Reed Jr. that prompted a quick GU timeout at 18:25 with the Huskies up 6-0. Reed Jr. scored 11 points in the game's first five minutes, helping Connecticut to a 13-4 advantage before a stoppage at 15:28.
Midway through the first the Huskies briefly pushed their lead to double-digits, going up 23-13 with a Jayden Ross jumper at 9:42. Late in the first a stretch of seven of eight from the field got the Hoyas back within two possessions, and GU took advantage of a 1-of-10 finish to the half from UConn to slim the lead to 32-28 at the break. Connecticut shot only 36.4 percent in the opening stanza.
The Hoyas scored the first seven points of the second half to take their first lead of the day before UConn called for time, down 35-32 with 18:04 to play. Demary Jr. stopped an 8-0 run to start the frame for GU with four quick points, and an Eric Reibe put-back at 13:13 evened the score at 40-all.
The Huskies would total a 9-0 run over less than three minutes, going up 45-40 with a Mullins 3-pointer at 11:41. The Hoyas pulled back even at 45 before a pair of Mullins free throws and a breakaway Solo Ball slam gave Connecticut a 49-45 lead with 8:33 to go in regulation. A 3-pointer pulled GU back within two before a corner 3-pointer from Karaban, his first hit of the day, gave the Huskies a 58-53 edge with 5:20 to go.
More than two minutes later with UConn holding the same lead, Demary Jr. got to his spot for a pull-up jumper to put the Huskies up seven with 2:45 to play. With barely a minute on the game timer and the shot clock winding down, Ball got a high floater to go and put the Huskies up 62-55. The Hoyas took advantage of a tough spell from the line for the Huskies in the final moments and got back within three, but a game-tying 3-pointer was off line and Mullins snared the rebound before sinking a free throw to go up four. GU scored a put-back after the game was in hand to get the margin to its 64-62 final.
