STORRS, Conn. — UConn men's hockey fell to the University of Vermont by a final of 4-2, to split the weekend series.
The first period began with UConn and Vermont both playing physical and fast. Early in the first period dual penalties on both teams resulted in four-on-four hockey. Despite the four-on-four hockey neither team was able to score during the two minutes. Shortly after, Vermont found the back of the net as the puck took a deflection off a UConn defender and into the goal. With the one goal lead, Vermont's defense shined, preventing UConn from finding the back of the net in the period.
In the second period, the Huskies came out strong, tying the game just 30 seconds in as Jake Richard took the feed from Joey Muldowney and fired it past the Vermont netminder. Shortly after the Huskies took the lead as Tristan Fraser was in the right place at the right time for a rebound goal. It didn't take long for the Catamounts to respond as another awkward bounce by the puck found its way over Tyler Muszelik and off another UConn defender giving Vermont the 3-2 lead. The Huskies were unable to find the equalizer in the second as they entered the period break trailing by one.
The third period was all Vermont as their defense shut down the UConn attack. The Catamounts defense blocked shots and deflected preventing UConn from gaining momentum. The Catamounts sealed the win late in the third period when a turnover by Kai Janviriya resulted in a Vermont breakaway goal, giving the Catamounts the 4-2 win.
UP NEXT: The Huskies will turn their attention to their last non-conference matchups of the season as they will take on Yale in game one of the CT Ice Tournament beginning Friday Jan. 23. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 and can be streamed live on SNY.
