No. 7 UConn Shuts Out New Hampshire

DURHAM, N.H. – No. 7 UConn women's hockey defeated the New Hampshire Wildcats, 1-0 on Friday evening at the Whittemore Center. Powered by a strong defensive effort, the Huskies limited the Wildcats to a season low 16 shots on goal, improving UConn's record to 12-4-1 in Hockey East play and 19-6-2 overall this season.
UConn goaltender Tia Chan earned her fourth shutout of the season, making 16 saves in the win.
The first period featured several scoring chances for both the Huskies and Wildcats, but neither side managed to find the back of the net. UConn failed to capitalize on their two power-plays, while managing to kill off their lone penalty of the period. The Huskies generated numerous chances on goal, outshooting the Wildcats, 13-6 in the first period.
Senior forward Megan Woodworth scored the lone goal of the game on the power play midway through the second period. It marked her second game-winning goal, and 11th in total this season.
New Hampshire had four power-play opportunities in the second period, but UConn's defense, led by juniors Teagan Vaughan and Julia Stephen each delivered crucial blocks, halting the Wildcats attempts on goal. Stephen finished with a career high seven blocks. UConn had three power-play chances of their own in the period, cashing in on just one, despite several shots on goal by the Huskies attack. Junior forward Julia Pellerin led the UConn attack, registering 6 shots for the fifth consecutive game. Shots once again favored the Huskies in the second, 13-7.
The third period saw a series of defensive efforts and missed opportunities as both teams struggled to find the back of the net. Chan made 4 of her 16 saves in the final period. Senior forward Brooke Campbell was consistent in the faceoff circles for the Huskies, extending her streak by winning 6 or more faceoffs to 20 consecutive games. In the closing minutes of regulation, New Hampshire was called for two crucial penalties, helping UConn secure a hard fought 1-0 victory.
UConn outshot New Hampshire 34–16, effectively doubling the opponent's offensive output and maintaining pressure throughout the game, marking the fifth consecutive game the team has totaled at least 34 shots. On special teams, the Huskies capitalized by going 1-for-5 on the power play, while successfully killing all four of New Hampshire's power-play attempts. UConn's defensive discipline was on full display with 18 blocked shots, surpassing their season average of 14.19, contributing to a shutout victory.
