No. 7 Huskies Fall to New Hampshire in Overtime

STORRS, Conn. – No. 7 UConn women's hockey fell to the New Hampshire Wildcats, 3-2 in overtime on Saturday evening at the Toscano Family Ice Forum. The Huskies split the weekend series with the Wildcats, moving to 12-5-1 in Hockey East play and 19-7-2 overall this season.
The first period commenced with UConn applying pressure early with three shots on goal and two shots that rang the post in the opening five minutes. Two of the Huskies three power-play opportunities in the game came in the first period, but UConn could not capitalize on their chances on New Hampshire's goaltender, who finished with 49 saves. The first period concluded scoreless, with shots favoring the Huskies, 12-6.
Sophomore forward Claire Murdoch opened the scoring for the Huskies midway through the second period, her seventh goal of the season, giving UConn a 1-0 lead.
UConn goaltender Tia Chan held strong for the remainder of the second period, effectively denying all shots from New Hampshire, including several during a power play opportunity. The Wildcats had their two lone power-play opportunities come in the second period, but UConn's penalty kill held New Hampshire scoreless. The Huskies took the one-goal lead into the second intermission, as shots once again favored UConn, 20-17.
New Hampshire found an equalizer just four minutes into the third period, knotting the game at 1-1. The Wildcats went on to take a 2-1 lead with just under seven minutes remaining in regulation.
UConn battled back, throwing everything they had at New Hampshire in the closing minutes of regulation. Freshman defender True Thompson netted the equalizer with 3:31 remaining in regulation, her third goal of the season, leveling the score at 2-2.
Both teams exchanged multiple shots in the final minutes, but neither could break the deadlock before the period ended, sending the game to overtime.
In overtime, New Hampshire found a game-winner two minutes into the five-minute sudden death period, giving the Wildcats a 3-2 victory.
UConn outshot New Hampshire 51–41 in the game, led by Julia Pellerin, who recorded a career-high total of 10 shots. The Huskies were unable to capitalize on the power play, going 0-for-3, while New Hampshire also went 0-for-2. UConn excelled in the faceoff circle, winning 40 draws to New Hampshire's 20, maintaining possession for significant periods. Additionally, UConn blocked 17 shots compared to New Hampshire's 14, marking the second consecutive game where the Huskies recorded at least 17 blocks.
