GREENVILLE, S.C. – The UConn baseball team scored a season-high 10 runs to claim its series opener against Michigan State, 10-6, on Friday evening at Fluor Field.
UConn capitalized on 11 walks, three hit by pitches and tied a season-high with 12 hits to help the Huskies score in seven of its nine at-bats. The Winkel brothers combined for seven of the 10 runs with Pat Winkel driving in a pair and scoring two runs on the night. His older brother, Chris, drove in two runs and added a run scored in a multi-hit performance.
The UConn first baseman put UConn on the board first in the second inning with an RBI triple to deep centerfield. It was the second three-bagger of the year for Winkel.
Freshman Kyler Fedko followed suit with his first multi-hit and multi-RBI game. The younger Fedko brother contributed a two-out, RBI double off the green monster in the third to extend the UConn lead to 3-1.
Cole Brodnansky homered for the second-straight game in the fifth to push the lead to 6-2.
Mason Feole recorded a season-high 98 pitches in 4.0 innings of work as he ran out gas in the fifth, allowing three-straight hits to the Spartans. Michigan State trimmed the lead to one against Avery Santos and CJ Dandeneau but the redshirt senior kept the Huskies in front, 6-5, with a strikeout to strand the bases loaded.
Dandeneau was superb once again for the Huskies with 3.0 innings of one-run ball. The North Smithfield, R.I. native picked up his second win of the season and bridged the gap to UConn closer Jake Wallace.
Wallace recorded the final four outs of the ballgame to lock down his fifth save of the season. With the tying run at the plate in the eighth inning, Wallace struck out Bailey Peterson on a 100 mph fastball.
The Huskies moved to 5-0 on Fridays and resume the series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
