Two-Out RBIs Lead UConn to Victory vs. Northeastern

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn baseball team scored all six runs with two outs to defeat Northeastern, 6-2, on Wednesday afternoon at J.O. Christian Field.
After Northeastern took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, the Huskies immediately responded with a four-run frame to take the lead. John Toppa was hit by a pitch and Christian Fedko singled to begin the inning but after a double play ball the Huskies were on the brink of squandering an opportunity.
Junior David Langer provided a two-out, two-strike knock into centerfield to tie the game at one. After the clutch base hit for Langer, the Huskies received an RBI single from Pat Winkel and Mike Woodworth lined a two-run triple into the right field corner.
UConn added to the lead in the fourth on a two-run single from Anthony Nucerino to make it 6-1 Huskies.
Conor Moriarty, Langer and Christian Fedko each recorded multi-hit efforts for the UConn lineup.
Colby Dunlop made the start for the Huskies, logging 4.0 innings, allowing four hits, one earned run and totaled a season-high five strikeouts.
Randy Polonia earned the victory with a scoreless inning of work. The first victory for the redshirt junior since May 14, 2016 vs. UCF.
Chase Gardner, Avery Santos and Jake Wallace each logged a scoreless inning of work while Caleb Wurster and CJ Dandeneau combined to throw a scoreless eighth inning.
The Huskies move to 21-12 overall and are set to host Memphis for a three-game series at J.O. Christian Field beginning on Friday, April 12 at 3 p.m.
Notes
- The Huskies have two players that have reached base in at least 30 consecutive games. Mike Woodworth (30) and Anthony Prato (39) both extended their streaks on Wednesday.
- Anthony Nucerino is riding an eight-game hit streak after his two-single in the fourth inning.
- Randy Polonia earned his first win since May 14, 2016 vs. UCF.
- The Huskies are 11-3 when Pat Winkel gets the start behind the plate.
