STORRS, Conn. – The UConn baseball team gutted out a 3-1 series opening win vs. Memphis at J.O. Christian Field on Friday afternoon. The Huskies jumped to 22-12 and 6-4 in The American after the victory.
The junior left-hander Mason Feole was superb in 6.2 innings for the Huskies, allowing just one run on seven hits and struck out seven. In the second, fifth and sixth innings, Feole stranded runners in scoring position for the Tigers to keep UConn in the game.
Memphis starter Hunter Smith quieted the UConn bats, as the lefthander threw four scoreless inning to begin the ballgame. The Huskies broke through in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly from Anthony Prato to even the score at 1-1. Conor Moriarty worked his second walk of the game to start the inning and eventually came around to score.
Feole and CJ Dandeneau escaped a major jam in the seventh inning with runners at first and second and no outs. Feole recorded a strikeout and ground out before Jim Penders made the move to bring in the redshirt senior, Dandeneau. Making his 75th career appearance, the right-hander got Ben Brooks to fly out to keep the game tied.
The Memphis defense aided the Huskies in the bottom half of the seventh with a pair of errors to place runners at first and second with no outs. After a Mike Woodworth sacrifice bunt, Anthony Nucerino delivered a two-run single past the drawn in infield to give UConn its first lead of the day, 3-1.
