STORRS, Conn. – The UConn baseball team was stifled by the Memphis Tigers on Saturday, losing 7-1, to even the weekend series at a game apiece.
John Toppa led the way at the plate with a three-hit effort including his 200th hit of his career. Toppa became the 20th Husky to reach the 200 hit mark in his career.
Paul Gozzo got the Huskies on the scoreboard with a solo shot to left in the seventh. It was the third home run of the year for the UConn catcher.
The Tigers jumped on UConn for three runs in the first and then added a run in the second and third inning. Hunter Goodman homered in the seventh to make it 7-0 Tigers.
The Huskies best threat came in the first inning with two outs. Anthony Prato walked to extend his reach base streak to 41 games and then advanced to third on a Toppa single. After a hit by pitch to Christian Fedko loaded the bases, Pat Winkel struck out to end the threat.
The Huskies drop to 22-13 overall and 6-5 in The American. The Huskies and Tigers will play a rubber game on Sunday at 11 a.m. at J.O. Christian Field.
