BSB Holds On at UMass, 10-7

AMHERST, Mass. – The UConn baseball team held on for a 10-7 win at UMass on Tuesday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field. The Huskies move to 24-13 on the season.
The UConn offense was disciplined at the plate, forcing UMass starting pitcher Zach Clevenger to throw 42 pitches in the first inning. Pat Winkel gave the Huskies the lead with a sacrifice fly on the 10th pitch of the at-bat.
The Huskies extended their lead in the second with a five-run frame that saw 11 batters come to the plate. Mike Woodworth cashed in on a two-out RBI single to make it 3-0 Huskies. Christian Fedko dealt the big blow with a bases-clearing double down the left field line to push the lead to six. Fedko finished the day with a team-high four RBIs.
Woodworth, Fedko, Chris Winkel and Anthony Prato all recorded multi-hit games in the victory.
The Huskies led 10-2 entering the ninth inning but the Minutemen scored five runs on two hits to bring the go-ahead run to the plate. With the bases loaded and two outs, Caleb Wurster came on to earn his first career save.
Pinch-hitter Conner Smith hit a fly ball to the warning track that Kyler Fedko made a catch at the fence to preserve the win.
Joe Simeone picked up the victory with two scoreless frames out of the bullpen. Randy Polonia also registered a scoreless outing with a 1.0 inning stint.
Next up, the Huskies travel to No. 12 ECU for a three-game series with the Pirates beginning on Thursday, April 18 at 6:30 p.m.
Notes
- Christian Fedko tied a UConn season-high with four RBIs on Tuesday. Fedko also had four RBIs against No. 4 Louisville on Feb. 17 after hitting his first career grand slam.
- UConn is 6-1 in northeast midweek games.
- UConn grabbed its 17th road/neutral site win. That is tied for second most in the country.
