STORRS, Conn. – Junior Sydney Watson's record-breaking performance led the UConn women's lacrosse team to victory against UMass Lowell on Friday afternoon. The Huskies improve to 2-1 on the season with a 20-14 win at the Sherman Family Complex.
Watson finished the afternoon with eight goals, one assist, for nine points, as well as 14 draw controls. The junior is now the all-time leader in draw controls in a single game in UConn lacrosse history. Her eight goals tied Grace Nolan's record for most goals in a single game.
The Huskies offense provided a balanced attack, with eight different goal scorers and ten players recording at least a point. Sophomore Lia LaPrise added three goals and four assists, while juniors Abby Vetsch and Stephanie Palmucci added three and two goals, respectively. Senior Olivia Miles, sophomore Grace Coon, and freshman Rylee Brown added a goal each. Fellow freshman Sophie Sorenson scored her first collegiate goal as well.
Junior Sam McKenna and freshman Madelyn George aided the Husky offense, adding two assists each on the afternoon.
"We were able to figure it out after making some adjustments today. We put the points on the board and got the win which is great," said head coach Katie Woods. "At half, we had a change of focus and started to worry on ourselves and the little things. Halftime was a good chance for us to regroup and adjust the ways we needed to."
"As a whole, we need to clean up a few things looking ahead to Sunday. We've got to be a little feistier and take care of the ball better."
