NEW ORLEANS - The UConn baseball team (3-3) kicks off a three-game series at the University of New Orleans on Friday, February 28 at 7:30 PM ET. Game two first pitch will be at 3 PM ET and Sunday at 1 PM ET.
The Huskies are coming off a series win against No. 1/9 Michigan last weekend in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
Taking Down No. 1... UConn captured a series win against No. 1 Michigan Feb 21-23 in Port St. Lucie, Fla. For the Huskies, it is the first time in program history that they have taken a series against the top ranked team in the country.Â
You have to go back to 2001 against Notre Dame to find the last win for UConn against the No. 1 team. The Huskies defeated the Fighting Irish 19-12 on May 6 in South Bend.
UConn is 3-5 against the No. 1 team since 2000.
Bats Come Alive.. Opening weekend usually brings struggles for the bats after hitting indoors all winter with poor lighting. So after getting three games out of the way in Scottsdale, the bats came alive against No. 1 Michigan that featured two starters that could be potential MLB top round picks.Â
UConn hit .318 over the weekend with Kyler Fedko leading the way with seven hits in 11 at bats (.636) with three runs scored, two doubles, a triple and four RBIs. Earning the UConn outfielder American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll. Kylers brother, Christian, led the team with five RBIs including the go-ahead single in the ninth on Friday.Â
Reggie Crawford collected six hits including five doubles over the weekend. The freshman went 4-4 with three doubles on Sunday, becoming the first Husky since Willy Yahn in 2016 against Austin Peay, to have three doubles in the same game.
Who's House? Our Haus.. Senior RHP Kenny Haus has been a break out star in the UConn bullpen through the first two weekends. The California native has thrown 7.1 hitless innings while walking three and striking out seven.Â
On Friday against No. 1 Michigan with the game tied 7-7 in the bottom of the 8th, Haus maneuvered out of a runner at third, one-out scenario to keep the game tied and the Huskies captured the lead in the next half inning, giving Haus his first win of the year.
He's A Freshman?... Reggie Crawford is off to scorching start to begin his UConn career. The UConn 1B/LHP is tied for first in the country with six doubles (as of Tuesday). Since head coach Jim Penders has taken the helm (2004), no UConn freshman has recorded six doubles in the first six games of a season. Based on box scores dating back through 2000, there is a chance that Crawford is the first freshman in UConn history to have six doubles after the team's first six games of the year.
Back to Little League.. The Huskies have two players this season that will both pitch and hit. This past weekend Erik Stock and Reggie Crawford were the first Huskies to bat and pitch in a game since Kevin Vance in 2011. Stock went 2-3 at the plate and threw a scoreless inning of relief on Saturday. Crawford followed with a 4-4 day at the plate and recorded the final out of the sixth on Sunday.
Young Arms.. Will Lucas and Pat Gallagher put together strong performances on Friday against No. 1 Michigan to keep the Huskies within striking distance while trailing 5-0 and 6-2 before eventually coming back to win. Lucas, a sophomore throwing for the first time for UConn this season, and Gallagher, a freshman, combined to strike out 12 Wolverines in 5.1 innings of work. Lucas allowed one hit and a run in 2.1 innings while Gallagher allowed a hit and a run in 3.0 relief innings. Freshman Andrew Marrero was strong for the Huskies with two scoreless frames.
