HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The UConn baseball team (1-4) dropped the series at Southern Mississippi with a 7-6 defeat on Saturday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park.

The Huskies have now played four one-run ballgames out of their five contests and the only other game was a two-run game. Unfortunately, the Huskies have been on the wrong side of three of those one-run games including Saturday.

UConn jumped out to a 3-0 lead on the strength of RBI singles from Reggie Crawford and Kyler Fedko and an RBI double from David Langer.

Southern Miss responded with seven unanswered runs including a three-run and two-run homer for first baseman Christopher Sargent to give the Golden Eagles a 7-3 lead.

The Huskies battled back in the eighth with a three-spot behind a two-run single for Pat Winkel and RBI groundout off the bat of Crawford.

With the potential tying run at third and go-ahead run at second the Huskies struck out to end the threat in the eighth.

UConn had a season-high 14 hits but left 12 runners on base. Five Huskies registered multi-hit performances including a three-hit day for Langer.

The Huskies look to salvage a game in the series with a Sunday finale at 12 p.m. ET. Austin Peterson will make his first career start as a Husky.
