BSB Opens BIG EAST Play vs. Hoyas

STORRS, Conn. - The UConn baseball team (14-12) begin BIG EAST conference play this weekend against Georgetown beginning Friday, April 9 at 6 p.m. at Elliot Ballpark. In 2021, conference weekends will consist of four-game series with a single-game Friday, doubleheader Saturday with the first game seven innings and a single-game on Sunday.

The Huskies enter the weekend after a come-from-behind victory against Bryant in the midweek. The Huskies trailed 8-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh and rallied for three runs in the seventh and three in the eighth to steal the win, 9-8. UConn has now won 10 of its last 12 games and returns to BIG EAST play for the first time since winning the 2013 BIG EAST Tournament Championship.Â
UConn was picked in the preseason as the favorite in the conference. All-time the Huskies are 47-18 against the Hoyas
Patty Wink Heating Up.. Catcher Pat Winkel is heating up at the plate and behind the dish since recovering from a hamstring injury. The 3 YR SO is hitting .318 with four doubles, two homers, eight RBIs in his last 10 games. The Orange, Conn. native has also thrown out six of 10 would-be base stealers during this stretch.
The Freak.. 2 YR FR Reggie Crawford can do it all for the Huskies. The Frackville, Pa. native leads the team with eight homers and 32 RBIs while playing great defense at first base. The left-hander has also returned to the mound and been effective with 3.0 scoreless innings of work, three hits, no walks and eight strikeouts. Against Bryant, Crawford hit a two-run home run in the first, recorded four RBIs and closed out the game with his first career save after striking out the side.
Austin Rebounding From Injury.. Since getting injured against Texas Tech, starting pitcher Austin Peterson has been a big boost to the UConn starting rotation. The right-hander is 2-0 with a 0.95 ERA. In three starts, he has thrown 19.0 innings, allowed two earned runs and struck out 21. Opponents are hitting just .152 against him.
Brownie Points.. 2 YR FR Chris Brown is in the midst of a career-long five-game hit streak The UConn third baseman is hitting .389 with two doubles, one triple and six runs batted in.Â
Starting Pitchers Dealing.. Last week the UConn starting pitching staff logged 23 innings on the mound and allowed just one earned run. Joe Simeone had his best start of the season with a season-high five inning, allowing two hits and struck out eight.Â
Viper is Back.. Christian Fedko is back atop the BIG EAST and the Huskies team with 10 doubles this season. The UConn second baseman has recorded seven doubles in his last nine games since arriving at Elliot Ballpark for this home stand. The 4 YR JR now has 45 doubles which ranks 10th in program history.
