STORRS, Conn. - The No. 16 UConn field hockey team knocked off No. 13 Harvard, 2-1, in a shootout on Sunday afternoon at the Sherman Family Sports Complex.
In front of the 1981 UConn National Championship field hockey team, who were honored prior to the match, the Huskies and Crimson went back-and-forth for 80 minutes before the game was ultimately decided in a shootout.
Abby Gooderham and Aiyi Young scored in the shootout while Cheyenne Sprecher denied four of the five Crimson attempts to push the Huskies to 4-4 on the season and secure a weekend sweep of ranked teams.
The UConn back line of Sprecher, Young, Kourtney Kennedy, Lindsay Dickinson and Claire Jandewerth were outstanding against a Crimson team that had yet to be defeated and entered the match at 5-0.
The Huskies got it going in the third quarter with five penalty corner attempts but were unable to capitalize as the game remained scoreless until the shootout.
UConn heads on the road for a big road trip against a ranked Liberty side on Friday, September 24 at 3 p.m. and the reigning National Champions UNC Tar Heels on Sunday, September 26 at 1 p.m.
