BSB Splits Doubleheader at Xavier

CINCINNATI, Ohio - The UConn baseball team (17-13, 3-1 BIG EAST) split a doubleheader at Xavier after a 14-day pause between games. The Huskies lost 5-0 in game one but followed it up with an 8-5 game two victory.
Game One
In game one, the Huskies showed a bit of rust from their long lay off with a few mental miscues in the field and on the bases. The Huskies collected just six hits in the ballgame with David Langer, Kevin Ferrer and Erik Stock each recording a pair of hits.
Nick Zwack pitched a complete game shutout for the Musketeers with eight strikeouts along the way.
Ben Casparius pitched five innings, allowed just five hits and struck out eight but some mental mistakes and bad luck led to four earned runs across against the right-hander.
Game Two
The Huskies bounced back in game two with four home runs in the ballgame. David Langer got it going with his first home run of the season, a bullet that carried over the left field fence in the third inning.
Reggie Crawford followed with his league leading ninth home run of the year, a two-run shot, to make it 3-0 Huskies.
Austin Peterson earned his BIG EAST leading fifth win of the season with five innings of work, allowed three hits and struck out seven.Â
With the game tied 3-3 in the sixth, the Huskies responded with a sac fly from Erik Stock and two-run single from Kyler Fedko to push their lead back the three, 6-3.
The Huskies added on with back-to-back home runs from Erik Stock and Chris Winkel to make it 8-3 Huskies.
Kenny Haus came out of the bullpen and struck out the first nine batters he faced. He handed the ball to Caleb Wurster who secured his fourth save of the season with a scoreless ninth.
The Huskies resume the four-game series tomorrow with game three at 3 p.m. Joe Simeone will get the nod on the hill for the Huskies.
