ORLANDO, Fla.– In an old-fashioned pitcher's duel, the UConn baseball team lost its series opener at UCF, 2-1, on Friday evening at John Euliano Park. The Huskies drop to 15-9 and are 2-2 in The American.
Mason Feole dazzled for the Huskies with a season-high 7.1 innings that included retiring 10 in a row from the fifth inning to the eighth. Feole allowed just four hits and struck out seven to post his second-straight quality start.
Grant Schuermann was just a little better for the Knights and picked up the win with a complete game performance on 103 pitches. The graduate transfer allowed just four hits and the only run he allowed came on a fifth inning home run from Kyler Fedko. The long ball was the first of Fedko's career and tied the game at 1-1.
The Knights took the lead early on a two-out, 1-2 wild pitch that allowed Ray Alejo to score from third. Feole nearly was able to escape unscathed after allowing a leadoff double in the frame.
Senior Matthew Mika gave UCF the lead in the eighth on an RBI single against CJ Dandeneau.
The Huskies look to bounce back on Saturday with a 6 p.m. start and Jeff Kersten on the mound.
