BSB Splits Doubleheader at St. John's

QUEENS, N.Y.. - The UConn baseball team (22-15, 6-3 BIG EAST) split a doubleheader against St. John's on Saturday afternoon at Jack Kaiser to take a two-to-one series lead.
UConn dropped a 4-3 contest in a seven-inning game one and bounced back with a 6-0 win in game two.
Game 1
In the first game of the day, UConn jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening frame. Pat Winkel came through with an RBI double and Christian Fedko added an RBI ground out to make it 2-0 Huskies.
The Huskies led until the bottom of the fifth inning when St. John's put three runs across on four hits against UConn starter Ben Casparius to take a 4-2 lead.
UConn responded with a Pat Winkel solo shot in the sixth but were unable to tie up the game in the seventh.
Kyler Fedko reached on a two-out single, Korey Morton pinch ran and stole second but was left stranded on a ground out to end a seven-inning first game of the day.
Game 2
UConn rebounded in game two behind a masterful performance from 2 YR FR Pat Gallagher. The right-hander threw a career-high seven shutout innings and allowed two hits, one walk and struck out eight.
The Huskeis gave him all the support he would need in the third inning. Reggie Crawford produced a two-run single with two gone in the frame to give UConn a 2-0 advantage.
Chris Winkel helped add a run in the fourth by drawing a walk, stealing second and third and then came in to score on an Erik Stock RBI ground out to make it 3-0.
Chris Brown followed in the fifth inning with his first career home run, a solo shot, to extend the lead to four.
Winkel came back up in the sixth inning and delivered the cushion the Huskies needed with a two-run homer, his ninth of the year, to push the UConn lead to six.
In the eighth inning, Winkel notched his 200th career hit on a single into center field. The three-year captain became the 21st Husky to accomplish the feat.
UConn looks to win the series on Sunday with a 1 p.m. start.
Game Notes
- The Huskies have recorded seven shutouts on the mound this season. Pat Gallagher has started three of them.
- Chris Winkel is now tied for the team lead with nine home runs on the season. The fifth year senior had seven total in his first four seasons in Storrs (192 games)
- Garret Coe pitched a career-high two shutout innings of relief in game two of the doubleheader.
- Reggie Crawford leads the Huskies with 19 two-out RBIs.
