STORRS, Conn. - Behind a dominant performance from right hander Pat Gallagher, the No. 25 UConn baseball team (23-7, 2-0 BIG EAST) defeated St. John's (11-20, 0-2 BIG EAST) 13-0 to claim a series win on Saturday afternoon at Elliot Ballpark.
Gallagher logged a complete game shutout with four hits allowed, one walk and seven strikeouts. The Leominster, Mass. native did not allow a Red Storm base runner to reach third base. It was the first nine-inning complete game shutout for the Huskies since Tim Cate did it against ECU on May 18, 2017.
The Huskies helped out their starting pitcher with two great defensive plays from Ben Huber and Casey Dana to strand a runner in the first.
Erik Stock put the Huskies ahead for good with an inside-the-park home run in the bottom of the first. It was his seventh home run of the season, setting a new career-high for Stock.
The Huskies added on in the second with a 13-pitch walk to Matt Donlan and then back-to-back bunt hits from Korey Morton and David Smith. T.C. Simmons delivered a sac fly and Stock followed with a two-run single to make it 4-0.
Stock finished the day 4-4 with four runs scored while Morton contributed his second four-hit game of the season.Â
Matt Donlan extended his hit streak to six games with an RBI double and scored three runs for the Huskies.
Casey Dana added a three-hit effort while the Huskies piled up 17 hits on the day.
UConn will look to grab the series sweep on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. against the Johnnies.
